Online Radio vs Digital Radio: What's the Difference?

Online Radio vs Digital Radio: What's the Difference?

Since its invention and popularization, radio has been one of the most efficient and widely used means of communication in human history. Whether for recreational purposes, to convey messages between people, or to assist in communication during some of the largest events, it has always been present.

However, over the years, and as a result of technological advancements, new options have emerged to make this means of communication even more effective. Two great examples are online radio and digital radio. What is the difference between them?

Online Radio

Online Radio, or Web Radio, is a model that uses the internet itself to make the transmission. This is done through streaming, which transmits data in real-time.

This option has some consequences.

Firstly, the internet has no limitations, so anyone in the world can listen to a radio station, regardless of where they are, greatly increasing the potential audience.

And since the internet offers easier access to various resources, they can easily be implemented in the transmission, such as the option to be live or even recorded (autodj) and made available to the public on the website itself.

Digital Radio

On the other hand, digital radio differs from online radio due to the transmission, which is done through electromagnetic waves. The principle of operation is practically the same as the more traditional analog model, but with some different characteristics that end up having a significant impact.

The similarities mainly lie in the infrastructure required for the transmissions. In both cases, towers and antennas are used to transmit the signal.

The difference from the analog model lies in the way the signal is processed and transmitted. In the former, the options were only AM and FM, which are the bands that vary according to amplitude.

On the other hand, digital is done in a slightly different way. Its behavior is more similar to computer data, which is reorganized into a binary sequence that can then be transmitted.

This difference brings several advantages of digital radio over the analog option, such as much higher quality. In the AM band, digital transmission increases quality to the level of analog FM, and FM achieves quality similar to that of a CD.

This system also tends to consume much less energy during transmission. Because of this, there are studies to make it mandatory in certain countries like Norway to discontinue heavier analog signals, especially FM.

An important detail is regarding the transmission models that exist. Although there are many options, only a few are recognized. They are:

DAB
DAB+
DMB
DRM
DRM+
Eureka
HD Radio/IBOC

Before any initiative, it is necessary to evaluate which is the best option.

The Differences

One of the main differences, and one of the greatest advantages of online radio, is related to its lower cost. Since it only uses the internet, the investment is much smaller.

The resources that will be used typically include just a computer connected to the internet, a quality streaming service, and equipment such as microphones for live broadcasts.

Another interesting option is the use of extra resources in the transmission. Radio will always be an audio medium, but streaming services often allow for the inclusion of other interesting information, making it a great way to complement the broadcast.

Additionally, interaction with the audience is much easier. While social media facilitates conversation even in the digital model, online radio has resources that can make this easier and more direct.

These resources also vary when it comes to monetizing the radio, if applicable. In the digital model, the system is the same as always: advertising. However, in online radio, in addition to this option, partnerships can be established, and advertising can be done on the website itself.

But one of the most interesting features of online radio is the ability to record broadcasts and easily make these recordings available to the audience. This gives listeners more freedom to listen whenever they want or can, and also allows the creator to leave recorded programs to replace live ones if there are any issues.

Most of these advantages are not present in traditional radio, as it does not have these resources available.

On the other hand, online radio tends to be a bit more "fragile." A problem with the connection or a weaker network practically makes this option impossible. Additionally, due to its broad nature, it can be a very competitive environment.

There is also the issue of access for the audience that is outside the home to the content. Those without mobile internet connection may be unable or a bit discouraged from following along.

Another advantage of online radio is the reduction of bureaucracy. Any transmission needs to meet government requirements, except for the online option, which is not illegal even without a license.

On the other hand, digital radio requires a license and authorization from Anatel. Otherwise, it may be considered illegal.

Digital radio presents all the advantages of the traditional analog model, except that it is more powerful.

What to Expect in the Future?

With the advantages, disadvantages, and differences clearly outlined, the question remains. What can we expect in the future?

Currently, there is much discussion regarding what will happen with radio transmission platforms. Some governments, such as those of Australia and the United States, argue that the digital system is redundant and that information can be easily accessed through online channels.

On the other hand, there simply isn't enough bandwidth for everyone to transmit and receive all data, especially from larger radio stations. It is essential to consider the audience in more rural areas, who often rely on digital radio for information and entertainment, even in more advanced countries.

In the end, it will likely all come down to the internet. It is a very efficient, fast, and inexpensive way to transmit any information. Technology just needs to catch up. But that is still a bit far off. For now, digital and online radio complement each other and help each other become stronger. Each has its advantages, audience, and ideal user profile.
